Quote of the day, April 5

Hazel Dicken-Garcia, on the press

“Since conceptions of the press’s role are products of ideas and trends in a given society at a given time, notions of this role, shaped by dominant trends, differ in each era. These conceptions in turn shaped standards—the criteria governing the way journalists conducted and viewed their work, and the norms as manifested in content. Related to this, the press’s own development as a social institution also influenced conceptions of its role.”
